Software testing 2022: Key trends to watch out for
As testers, we always aim to keep abreast of the latest testing trends to emerge. Working in IT is incredibly exciting and rewarding but knowing what lies ahead is critical. As we look here at software testing 2022, we outline some key trends we believe will grow.
Our end-of-year-review for 2021 featured a couple of trends we think will be big this year. There are many more to explore, including those listed below. Do let us know your own thoughts on the subject in the comments section. We’re always keen to engage with fellow software testing fans and aficionados alike!
Automation in testing
We estimate that less than 20% of testing is currently automated. Test automation will never replace manual software testing but it must be utilised more. There are certainly instances where it can increase efficiency. For example, many organisations are now seeking to implement DevOps practices to save time – more on that below.
To do this effectively, software testing companies and testing teams must embrace test automation. We would go so far as to suggest that the bulk of regression testing should be automated. Automation in testing will be easier to achieve as more advanced methods and tools emerge.
Artificial intelligence in testing
As part of the software testing community, we know artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) well. That said, the application of AI/ML in testing is still in its infancy. This will change as big data leads to more advancements being made in applying AI/ML in testing.
AI/ML algorithms can produce stronger test cases, scripts, data and reports. Predictive models greatly help in the decision making process. Smart analytics better enables testing teams to detect faults and areas of high risk.
As we move forwards, AI/ML will be used more to address issues with test case prioritisation and more.
DevOps deployment to grow
As aforementioned, the deployment of DevOps is rising to meet increasing demands around speed. DevOps practices, rules and processes can reduce time from development to operations. They essentially help to integrate activities from both, thus shortening software lifecycles.
