Software testing failure examples
Here at eTestware, we adopt a strategic and proactive approach in everything we do. As part of theICEway, our efforts are always infused with a security by design ethos. This then ensures that we are strongly prepared for any issues arising during the testing process.
Issues are commonplace – uncovering them is what testing is ultimately for – but even when they are fixed, errors can still occur later on down the line. You must then always test, test and re-test software to better the chances of avoiding software testing failure examples such as those listed below…
Software failures
These can happen for a variety of different reasons. Bugs, poorly written code and misinterpretation of the original specification are quite common. Insufficient testing is too, which is something we actively discourage. When you consider how essential IT is in business, as indeed it is in life, then clearly such failures in software should be avoided at all costs.
Software testing failure examples
This list is by no means exhaustive but certainly demonstrates how disastrous software failures can be.
- Yahoo data breach (2016)
This much-publicised breach saw information stolen that potentially included email addresses, names, dates of birth, telephone numbers, passwords and security answers. The resulting investigation suggested that no payment card data, unprotected passwords or bank account information was obtained. Yahoo users were then urged to change their details in response to the breach. They were given a reminder to avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from suspicious emails.
- Airbus A400M plane crash (2015)
As reported by the BBC, this crash took place near Seville and led to the deaths of the four crew members on board. Investigators then found that the crash may have been caused by software problems. Airbus engineers then discovered anomalies in the aircraft’s data logs.
- Heathrow airport disruption (2020)
Last year, flights to and from Heathrow were disrupted after technical issues affected its departure boards and check-in systems. Over 100 arrivals were cancelled over a 2-day period, with a similar figure accounting for departing flights.
