Software testing interview questions
We’re always keen to help budding software testers, so here we amass some of the more common software testing interview questions.
Before we drill into those software testing questions, here are some general tips for any job interview. Whether it is your very first one or you have been through many, it is perfectly normal to be nervous! The key to success is preparation and practice. You should also:
- Research the company you are applying to; go through their website, social media profiles, and any news articles about them
- Review the job description so that you are fully aware of the requirements for the position you are applying for
- Practice your answers to common interview questions; for example, ‘tell me something about yourself?’ or ‘what are your strengths and weaknesses?’
- Dress appropriately for the job interview; your research may indicate that the company culture embraces a casual dress code
- Be on time for the interview; in fact, aim to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early

Software testing questions
Some questions on manual testing:
- What is the difference between the Software Testing Life Cycle (STLC) and the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)? (STLC validates and verifies the software whilst SDLC deals with development and coding)
- What is validation? (It is the process after the development phase where the software is evaluated to check whether it meets the customer requirements)
- What is verification? (The process of evaluating software at the development phase to see whether the specified requirements for a product of a given application are satisfied)
Advanced questions for more experienced testers
- Describe valuable steps to take to resolve issues while testing (record / log and handle any problems which have occurred; report the issues and then control / define the issue management process
- Name two parameters that are useful to know the quality of test execution (defect reject ratio and defect leakage ratio)
- What information should you cover in a test plan? (Test Strategy, test objective, exit criteria, resource planning, test deliverables)
